Example : "Item A" appears twice in the StockItem list in Tally. Why does this happen ?

Ans:

This problem arises when you incorrectly use copy/paste from Excel into Tally.  Let's try to reproduce this situation

Wrong Method
Step 1. In Excel: Press Ctrl+C to copy the StockItem
Presume the StockItem name is "Item A".

Step 2. In Tally : Press Ctrl+Alt+V to paste the StockItem.
The above steps will create a StockItem in Tally.

Step 3. Now, try manually creating another StockItem with the same name i.e. "Item A"

Surprisingly, it gets created and there are two StockItems named "Item A" in Tally

Correct Method

Step 1. In Excel : Press F2, select the text and press Ctrl+C to copy
Presume the StockItem name is "Item B".

Step 2. In Tally : Press Ctrl+Alt+V to paste the StockItem.

The above steps will create a StockItem "Item B" in Tally.

Step 3. Next, try manually creating another StockItem with the same name i.e. "Item B". It won't get created.

Conclusion

Do not use Ctrl+C to copy the StockItem from Excel; instead first press F2, select the text and then press Ctrl+C to copy it.
